Something about me.
Something about me.
As the oldest daughter of 12 children, I helped my mother with the little ones for as long as I lived at home. This is me at age 5 with my baby brother, Jamie, at our front door. As you can see, our post-depression, post WWII home, was meager. At the time my father was making cinder blocks with a Sears & Roebuck mold to build our home. We moved, in one year, to our new three room home.
At the age of 18 I left home to attend school in Los Angeles. I chose a business school because I could work and go to school at the same time. This prepared me to manage my future career that was not even an idea at the time.
Married at the age of 19, during the next thirty years, we raised five wonderful children. I went to school when I could and earned a degree in elementary education. When doing my student teaching I realized this direction did not fit me and thought I had wasted my time and money. It was a dark period in my life.
As my children entered their teens, I worked for several years as a youth minister for the Catholic Church and realized that I was most fulfilled when I worked with the parents of the youth. This led me to believe that teaching elementary children is not my calling, but teaching adults is. I enrolled in UNLV to take a master degree in Marriage & Family Therapy. It didn’t take me long to understand that when a mother was offered skills and guidance to make major changes in herself, the whole family changed.
In 1995 I moved to Michigan where I continued private practice and worked at St.Thomas a’Becket as Family Life Counselor. My most successful endeavor there was preparing couples for marriage.
In 40+ years of my professional work, I have learned so much from my clients. I have held their stories and experiences close to my heart. They have proven to me the value of every struggle and the goodness in every person
